Unique Ideas for Holiday Decorating

The holidays are already upon us, and with everything that has been happening this year ideas for decorating may not be at the top of your list. If you haven’t had the time or the bandwidth to deal with decorating, here are a few ideas to get the holiday ball rolling.

Got a tree in the yard?

If you have a tree in your yard you have the makings for a few holiday decorations already. Clip off some bare branches, leave them natural, or paint them white (or green, or navy, or whatever color you like), and string with clear or colored Christmas lights. They can be placed along mantles, in a flower vase, or affixed with glue to their own special base.

Orange is the new green.

Instead of the same old green garlands, try an orange garland made from dried orange slices. Just a bit of natural twine and ta-da! You have an inexpensive and unique holiday garland that can be used year-round.

Try pink. Or blue. Or yellow. Or whatever you love! Decorating for the holidays does not always have to be green and red. Navy blue is popular this holiday season and looks elegant paired with crisp white. If you love pink, try adding it with shades of orange. If you love pastels try mixing some lilac, creams, and blues. Make this holiday season yours with color.

Go upside-down. If you find yourself with a limited amount of space for a tree, try an upside-down tree! It leaves your floor space clear and adds a unique and whimsical touch to your Christmas décor.

Add greenery to unexpected places. A bit of greenery tucked into random places around your home can add a lovely and unexpected touch. Tie some to lighting elements (taking care that nothing will catch fire!), tuck into the corners of bookcases, and tie to the backs of chairs with ribbon.

Vintage is always in style. Old sheet music cut into shapes of stars and bells. Children’s holiday wishes written on ‘antiqued’ paper shapes. Vintage tins or boxes filled with holiday decorations. Folded book pages, old postcards, whatever you have around the house can be used to decorate.

Use unexpected elements. Fill bowls with pomegranates and tiny silver balls. Use the lovely colors of squash we have this time of year along with berries and other fruits, pinecones, chestnuts, etc. Neutral and natural will provide a cohesive holiday display.

Decorating for the holidays doesn’t always have to equal spending lots of cash. Look around your home for items that are already special and can be spruced up. Take your already in use dining chairs and add ribbons, bows, and ornaments. Tie ornaments to the ends of curtain rods. Add holiday elements to green plants you already have around your home. The only limits are your imagination!
