Suffering From Hair Loss? You May Have Health Issues

The hair on a woman’s head can be important not just to her, but also to her society. There are some women who are not allowed to cut their hair and must keep it hidden away, while others will make a sacrifice of shaving their head bald. Cultures all around the world have particular ideas about what a woman should do with her hair.

For some women hair loss is a reality for a variety of reasons; for example, my hair is thinning in exactly the same manner as my mothers did. If a woman is ill and must take medications it could lead to hair loss. Also, the chemicals used in hair products can cause hair loss as the liver must process the toxic chemicals often used in dyes, bleaches, and other hair products.

Loss of hair can also mean that there is something going on internally such as too much stress or lack of vitamins. Vitamin D deficiency is common among women, particularly those who live in climates that do not get much sun. There is also a plethora of other ailments associated with vitamin D deficiency such as gum disease, depression, diabetes, and high blood pressure. The risk of cancer associated with sunbathing has caused many to avoid the sun altogether, and for those, a vitamin D supplement is necessary to obtain the vitamin D they need on a daily basis. There are also other deficiencies that can cause hair loss such as lack of copper or zinc.

Changing your diet to incorporate more fruits and vegetables can help to provide the vitamins and minerals needed to sustain healthy hair and a healthy body. It can be challenging to change your diet, particularly if you work outside of the home. Remaining strong and doing what’s best for your body can be hard, especially when passing the local fast-food restaurant. Just remember that thinning spot on your head when you need some willpower. It’s also important to surround yourself with friends and family who will be encouraging during your lifestyle change.

Hormones can also play an important part in thinning hair; some women will experience changes in their hormones as early as 30 years old. Some of these changes could include hair growing in places it never has before and body hair becoming coarser. If you suspect that hormones are playing a part in your hair loss your physician should be able to conduct tests to determine if your hormone levels are off. There are also tests available that can be processed through the mail. And in regard to hormones, once menopause hits you can add that to the hair-loss possibilities. Taking the advice of a hair-loss specialist, I was able to slow the hair loss process when I started taking Biotin (vitamin B-7) along with Manganese. Biotin deficiency can cause hair loss, and manganese helps the body form connective tissue.

Stress is another thing to think about when experiencing hair loss. Too much stress for too long a period can actually cause damage to the brain by releasing a chemical called cortisol, which is what causes humans the flight or fight response to a stressful situation. When a woman experiences excessive amounts of stress it can cause hair to fall out and the hair cuticle to become dormant, rather than producing replacement hair. If the stress levels are brought down the hair will begin to grow, but it will take a few months.

The reason for hair loss can be varied, and the ways we deal with it are too, whether it’s wearing a wig, a topper, or embracing your beautiful head. Try to keep the stress levels down, and visit your doctor to ensure your body is healthy.
