5 In-Demand Career Paths that Don't Require a 4-Year Degree



There are many career paths available to those who do not wish to spend years of their lives and incur thousands of dollars of debt for a four-year degree. The healthcare industry is on the rise and growth in this field is expected to continue for years to come. The hospitality field is another place where growth is expected to rise with many of the positions available not requiring college. Many of these positions will provide on-the-job training, or may require a two-year vocational program.


1. Streetcar and Subway Operators – Operators of public transit systems usually require a high school education or equivalent. They ensure that the train or subway runs on time, interact with dispatchers and passengers, ensure passengers' safety and get everyone to work in a timely manner. Streetcar and Subway Operators receive on-the-job training and the median pay for this job is approximately $60,000.00 per year.


2. Paralegal – In the United States, a paralegal is one who has studied the law and can perform legal work such as research, writing reports, and other forms of documentation for the supervising attorney. Paralegals can be registered or certified and the education for this career can be on-the-job training or the completion of a specialized program. The pay for paralegals varies greatly from state to state with the median income being approximately $45,000.00 per year.


3. Paramedic – A professional of the healthcare industry, a Paramedic provides advanced medical care in emergency situations. Most paramedics will find themselves in an ambulance or other form of emergency medical transportation. The training to become a paramedic can be rigorous depending on how high up the chain a person wishes to be; the most basic training takes approximately six months to complete. Each state has its own set of requirements for becoming a Paramedic so it’s best to do some research before beginning a program. The median income for a paramedic is approximately $40,000.00 annually.


4. Dialysis Technician – A dialysis caregiver is trained to maintain the dialysis machines as well as provide hemodialysis to patients with end-stage renal disease. The dialysis technician will provide care to their patients throughout the procedure which usually takes four hours and is performed three times a week (in some cases it may be more or less). To become a dialysis technician one must complete training at a vocational school or other certified training programs. The median income for a dialysis technician is approximately $50,000.00 per year.


5. EKG Technician – EKG stands for Electrocardiogram, which is a machine that checks the heart to ensure it is working properly. An EKG test is used to assess the heart rhythm, evaluate abnormalities, and diagnose a heart attack. A person only needs a high school diploma to apply for a job in this field however, job prospects will be much better if certification is obtained. The median income for an EKG technician is approximately $40,000.00 per year.
